LUCA BURATTO • 2015 Honens Prize Laureate

Luca Buratto, laureate of the 2015 Honens Piano Competition, has already set the classical world on its ear with his thrilling and lyrical performances. A veteran of concert halls around the world, Luca joined us in High River fresh from his Carnegie Hall début.  

Luca Buratto has been described as “a name to watch” by the Guardian, and “no ordinary virtuoso” by the Telegraph. Winner of the 2015 Honens International Piano Competition, he has earned particular praise for his interpretation of the work of Robert Schumann. Other competition successes include third prize and audience prize in the 2012 International Robert Schumann Competition. He has been featured on national radio and TV broadcasts such as BBC Radio 3, Radio Classica, Radio 3 RAI, WFMT, WQXR and Canale 5.

Luca has appeared with the London Philharmonic, the Calgary Philharmonic, La Verdi Orchestra in Milan, the Toronto Symphony, and Magedburg Philharmonic. Performance venues include Wigmore Hall, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Gilmore Festival Rising stars in Kalamazoo, the Berlin Konzerthaus, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Royal Festival Hall, Roy Thompson Hall and Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore. Festivas and residencies include Lugano Festival and Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Busoni Festival in Italy, Marlboro Music Festival and Music Academy of the West in the U.S., as well as the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and the Banff Centre for Performing Arts.

As Luca believes in the importance of using music as a powerful tool for social justice, he has performed in collaborations with non-profit organizations including Progetto DDD Onlus, Progetto Brahms a Milano and Primavera di Baggio in Milan, as well as The Red Pencil and Superhero Me in Singapore.

Luca graduated from the Milan Conservatory in 2010, then earned a Master’s degree from the Bolzano Conservatory, and a Master of Advanced studies as a Theo Lieven Scholar at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano) under the guidance of William Grant Naborè.

 Masterclass | Saturday, October 28, 2017 • 11.30 am

In addition to the recital on Saturday evening, Luca hosted a morning masterclass with some of Alberta’s fine young pianists.Those who have wondered what goes on in a piano lesson had the chance to observe top-notch teaching and learning in action. Admission was by donation.
