For Illia Ovcharenko, the piano is a companion which brings joy, eases pain, and reveals who he truly is. With it, he is making a name for himself as a force on the international stage. The 2022 winner of the Honens International Piano Competition, he embodies “technical mastery, perseverance against adversity, and an understanding of musical text that is both intellectual and emotional.”

Still in his early 20s, Ovcharenko has won awards and acclaim. International Piano ranks him amongst pianists including Nikolai Lugansky, Evengy Kissin, Yuja Wang, and Daniil Trifonov. He has been invited to perform with renowned orchestras across Europe, North America and the Middle East, released two albums, and played for a sold-out Carnegie Hall (twice).

This October, he performs for us in High River.

“Ovcharenko’s playing was a veritable masterclass, on the felicitous melding of energy, intensity, bravura technique and innate lyricism. He has found the secret of how to make the piano sing.”

Biography

After hearing a Tchaikovsky selection played live in his hometown of Chernihiv, six-year-old Illia Ovcharenko told his mother that he wanted to be a concert pianist. At age nine, he began lessons. At 12, he gave his first concert on the stage of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine, and was invited to study at the famous music school in Kiev, Ukraine.

Since that time, Ovcharenko has won awards and prizes at more than 20 competitions throughout the world, including first prize at the Kissinger Klavier Olymp (2024) and the New York International Competition (2022), and second prize at the Hilton Head International competition (2022).

He is completing a masters in Hannover, Germany, with the support of his longtime mentor, Arie Vardi. Ovcharenko also studies at the International Musikakademie Liechtenstein, one of Europe’s leading music education programs for emerging artists.

He has performed with the Orchestre National d’Île de France, the Orchestra of La Monnaie, the Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, the Jerusalem and Haifa Symphony Orchestras, and at venues and festivals including Carnegie Hall, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Sendesaal in Hannover, Robert-Schumann-Saal in Düsseldorf, and Salle Bourgie. Upcoming debuts include the Israel Philharmonic, Deutsche-Symphonie Orchester, I Pomerrigi Musicali, Edmonton Symphony and San Antonio Philharmonic, and recitals at the Konzerthaus Berlin, the ‘Folle Journee’ Warsaw, the Kissinger Olymp, Dubai Opera, Salle Cortot, Music Toronto and Shenandoah University.

His influences include composers Levko Revutsky and Valentyn Silvestrov, who he says embody resilience in their own distinct forms of musical expression. He is most at home playing romantic repertoire, and thrives on live performance, saying it feels as if his soul units together with that of the composer on stage.

“I’m so happy when people hear me play and say I brought something new to their life or let them forget about their current troubles,” Ovcharenko says.

Illia Ovcharenko’s solo performances were technically flawless and impeccably musical. He captured the wild emotional swings of Schumann’s Kreisleriana, vaulted effortlessly over the hurdles in Ginastera’s Sonata No. 1 and concluded with a stupendous performance of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor. I’m confident this 21-year-old Ukrainian will have a big career.
