This is the pause you’ve been waiting for: a free afternoon concert featuring the award-winning flutist Jiajia Li, who has built a career on following her curiosity. Whether she is tapping into improvisation, classical repertoire, or Chinese musical traditions, Jiajia’s work unsettles expectations.
The concert takes its title from one of the most cherished works in the Chinese musical tradition. The serene and gently wistful “Flute & Drum at Sunset” evokes images of quiet reflection: tranquil waters, drifting boats, and a gradual transition from day to night.
Jiajia has been described as one of Calgary’s most adventurous musicians. She is the recipient of the Stingray Classical Artist in Residence award at the National Music Centre, a CARAS (Juno Awards) Micro-Grant, and multiple Banff Centre scholarships. She forges her identity through music and performance, cutting across a wide range of modern musical experimentations and traditions.

Jiajia’s multi-country conservatory education spans Beijing, Toronto, and Frankfurt, including a masters degree from the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. When not teaching at Mount Royal University Conservatory or directing the Calgary Chinese Orchestra’s youth ensemble, she is half of the Ginger Beef duo exploring an eclectic instrumental pop sound.
