To venture into the terrain of Land’s End Ensemble is to stand at the edge of innovation in contemporary Canadian classical music. Winners of two Western Canadian Music Awards and multiple Juno nominations, the group offers an inviting entry point into new musical territory.
With an album list that reads like an archive of contemporary Canadian composition over the last two decades, Land’s End has celebrated the music of prominent figures such as R. Murray Schafer, John Corigliano, Allan Gordon Bell and Omar Daniel as well as featuring many emerging local talents.
This event features Maria van der Sloot, Beth Root Sandvoss and Susanne Ruberg-Gordon as they pair the precision of violin, cello, and piano with adventurous new works that capture the ear and the imagination.

Land’s End currently serves as Ensemble-in-Residence at Calgary’s Mount Royal Conservatory, which supports the next generation of musicians.

Maria van der Sloot
violin
Canadian violinist Maria van der Sloot enjoys a diverse career as a performer and educator, and has been recognized at the Canadian Music Competition and the National Music Festival. In addition to her work with Land’s End Ensemble, she has been featured as a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic and National Arts Centre Orchestra, and performed extensively throughout North America.
She received her Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the New England Conservatory of Music, as recipient of the Vernon Scholarship, and her Master of Music (Distinction) from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Beth Root Sandvoss

Cellist Beth Root Sandvoss has a notably varied career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and pedagogue. She has recorded six commercial CDs and has premiered more than 50 new works for solo cello, cello/piano and chamber ensemble. As a founding member of the acclaimed Land’s End Ensemble, whose most recent Centrediscs release, Gravity and Grace, won a Juno Award and a Western Canadian Music Award.
She worked and studied in Hong Kong and Wisconsin before pursuing graduate work at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Beth is a member of the UCalgary String Quartet in residence at the University of Calgary.
Susanne Ruberg-Gordon

Quoted by the Chronicle Herald as “a superb musician,” Swedish-born pianist Susanne Ruberg-Gordon is a highly regarded and sought-after chamber musician and collaborative pianist. She is recognized for her artistry, nuance, interpretation and curiosity and has performed in Canada, the US, China and UAE.
A passionate educator, Susanne is on faculty at the Mount Royal University Conservatory Academy, is the Artistic Facilitator of Collaborative Pianists, and has been a Collaborative Artist for the Morningside Music Bridge program in Canada, China, Poland and the US since 2001.
